THE BARNS AT HAMILTON STATION VINEYARDS

Yesterday I had a little birthday gathering to celebrate the fact that I'm turning 28 on Wednesday. In past years, I've gone out dancing with friends, gone to a pumpkin patch with Josh, or had a huge bar night to celebrate.

This year, I was feeling a little more low key. 28 is an odd one to turn. It's older, but it's not a milestone birthday. I guess the best way I can describe it is that I feel content, settled, and totally comfortable turning 28. I think it's going to be a good year.

Since I have to work a conference for 12 hours on my actual birthday, I thought it would be nice to celebrate with my family and friends who live in the D.C. area this weekend at a winery. I had never been to The Barns at Hamilton Station Vineyards, but it was perfect! What a gorgeous venue.

It's been raining for 12 thousand years (read: 5 solid days) here, but even though the weather was icky, we were safe and dry inside their beautiful barn. We each did a tasting and then grabbed wine to enjoy with all the goodies that we had. There was quite a spread--I brought all the cheese in the world, Josh made pumpkin muffins, my mom made a chocolate cake with whipped cream icing, and almost all the food was gone by the end of the day.

Live music + some of my favorite people + wine + pumpkin muffins + cheese + laughing all afternoon = a delightful birthday celebration.

Everyone really enjoyed the tastings. The wines were all good but the most popular among our group was the table white wine. It wasn't quite a sweet as a Riesling, but it was crisp and floral with a delicious finish. Josh and I got a bottle to share through the afternoon.

Elementary school friends!

Amanda, Sherman, and Lillian came from apple picking and that little lady was the hit of the party!

Mom made one of my favorite cakes! Chocolate with her famous whipped cream icing. And chocolate chips in the cake and on top.

That barn!

This surly fellow sounded like Johnny Cash (amazing!) and my mom got him to sing happy birthday to me. :)

It stopped raining so we ventured out to the beautiful patio!

Haha, my step-dad's face is HILARIOUS!

Stay tuned to She is Moments this week.
I've got some fun surprises planned for my 28th Birthday on Wednesday!

  2. This is my dream day! I absolutely love wineries. We went vineyard hopping in Virginia for a friend's bachelorette years back at this time of year and had sooooo much fun. Glad your birthday weekend was a great one! (And yes, so glad the sun is back now. That week of rain was so insanely depressing!)
